Hymne des fraternisés - I'm Dreaming of Home - Joyeux Noël - Vimy Ridge 90

06:53
Music clip from the movie, Joyeux Noël (2005), lyrics by Gary LEWIS, music by Philippe ROMBI. This clip is from the 90th anniversary celebration when Queen Elizabeth II rededicated the Vimy Memorial, on Easter Monday, April 9, 2007. Featuring Inuit singer, Susan Aglukark ("Officer" of the Order of Canada) and 45 members (aged 10 to 22) of the Confederation Centre of Charlottetown Youth Chorus. Credits and copyright to the CBC. For further viewing, purchase the DVD, "Vimy Ridge 90" (180 mins) CBC Home Video, commentary by Peter MANSBRIDGE. ENGLISH LYRICS I hear the mountain birds The sound of rivers singing A song I've often heard It flows through me now So clear and so loud I stand where I am And forever I'm dreaming of home I feel so alone, I'm dreaming of home It's carried in the air The breeze of early morning I see the land so fair My heart opens wide There's sadness inside I stand where I am And forever I'm dreaming of home I feel so alone, I'm dreaming of home This is no foreign sky I see no foreign light But far away am I From some peaceful land I'm longing to stand A hand in my hand ... forever I'm dreaming of home I feel so alone, I'm dreaming of home.

Emmeline - theme from The Blue Lagoon - by Vincent SPICER

04:18
This is the theme music from The Blue Lagoon, the 1980 movie starring Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins, directed by Randal Kleiser (Grease); the music was written by Basil Poledouris (he also composed music for Conan, and many others). I met Basil in 1982 at his home in Encino, California, while on my way to Tahiti and Fiji (to where they filmed the Blue Lagoon. Basil autographed one of his LP vinyl records for me, when I played this music to him. I had learned it by ear from going to watch the movie in the theatres. I will get this piece practiced and arranged, and do a proper recording of it later. For now, I was just playing around. Basil said he got this melody when he was sailing his sloop around the Fjords of Norway and Sweden one summer. He had kept the melody in his head for some time before he applied it to a movie. Email me if you would like a PDF of the sheet music [email protected] www.studiospicer.com

Hymne des fraternisés - I'm Dreaming of Home - Joyeux Noël - Vimy Ridge 90 - Piano solo

05:13
Music from the movie, Joyeux Noël (2005), lyrics by Lori BARTH and Gary LEWIS, music by Philippe ROMBI (France). An almost forgotten piece of history, remembering the unplanned truce on Christmas Eve (1914) during WWI, enemy soldiers fraternised. War had stopped for a few hours while German, French and Scottish soldiers celebrated Christmas Eve in the trenches. This song expresses the longing of the lonesome soldier, "dreaming of home" while so far away at war in a foreign land. This song brings together both Remembrance Day and Christmas Day. A Starry Night by Italo TARANTA - Grade 1 Piano RCM

Notice that although "pedal is optional" according to the score, I use almost none here. Pedaling is difficult with these quickly changing harmonies and should only be used to cover the wide leaps (to avoid silence, breaks). RCM Grade 3 List C - page 25 Repertoire book. This performance is up-to-speed; it should go something like this for exam performance. I have also recorded a "slow" version of this for students to compare and verify their notes and fingering (during the first stages of learning the notes for this piece).

Andante in G minor, by Telemann, "List A" piece from the grade 1 repertoire book. I am actually playing this at the tempo indicated by the metronome markings, but I think if you played this even a little bit slower than this tempo, it would be acceptable for "exam speed." Grade 8 Piano RCM Technical Requirements - by Vincent SPICER

40:49
Here I play the entire book, Piano Level 8 Technical Requirements (2008), from beginning to end. This is what you need to be able to play, very much as you hear it played in this video, to be ready for the RCM grade 8 piano exam. This video is for reference purpose, to give you a general idea of the technical requirements. You should have all technical exercises very clean and polished; I recorded this "cold" (without practice) so there are a few minor rough spots, notably some irregular steadiness. This is because I'm used to playing at 120 to 144 (scales) so I tend to rush ahead of the metronome as I play through these scales at 88. The purpose however is to give a general overview of the amount of different technical exercises that must be learned (117 different items to practice! -- 39 pages). When you practice technique, devote a lot of rigorous, disciplined time to it (as much as practicing repertoire and studies). http://www.studiospicer.com

River Flows in You - by Yiruma (close up)

03:25
I'm testing camera/mic location to achieve the best acoustics. The camera is about 8 feet away, at the front corner of the piano. The microphone is a bit further from the piano in this video than in the other video of this same piece where the camera is placed at the side-centre of the piano and about 6 feet away. It seems that the closer the microphone is, the better the sound (clarity, purity). Comments on the acoustics are invited (please view the other video I made of this piece). I picked this piece to test for acoustics because it has a clear melody line that lends itself well to demonstrate how clear this Baldwin piano is. The piano was tuned and voiced by an expert piano technician only 2 days before this recording. Unfortunately, the quality of my camera/mic doesn't do justice to the quality of sound that this piano can produce. After Colin Meckelburg (RPT) worked on this piano for 3 hours, I couldn't believe the degree of refinement that I could achieve (extreme pianissimo), and the action so well regulated after Colin worked on my piano. I highly recommend Colin from www.iTune4u.ca . Although this is an American-built Baldwin, the piano has an almost European quality of sound.

www.studiospicer.com RPM Piano Moving did an excellent job of moving and setting up the Baldwin Grand Piano. It was quick and smooth. This is how a grand piano is moved! Only 3 guys, and a 600 pound piano! They make it look so easy! Kyle Brown (head guy at RPM) then played a little piece of music after he set it up. He's the tall guy (6'6") in this video. http://www.rpmpianomoving.com/

J.S. Bach - Prelude in C Major - WTK Bk1 - Vincent SPICER

02:31
New recording with Renner Premium Blue Point hammers: http://youtu.be/QHQaFKIkWBo This recording is 20 seconds longer than my first recording of this piece. Although the metronome markings are indicated even faster than what I play in that first recording, it is still too fast in m opinion. This recording is as fast as I would take this piece; actually, if I had the time to really perfect this performance, I would even take this piece a bit slower yet. This piece is deceptively difficult. To play this as it should be (and not simply playing the notes) it is very hard to regulate your touch and control from one note to the next. The slower you play this, the harder it is to maintain the phrasing (since the tone does not sustain well on a piano, this is the inherent difficulty). It's difficult to be fully satisfied with a performance when you're pressed for time to try to record something! www.studiospicer.com

Bach - Goldberg Variations BWV 988 - Variation 30 - Quick Study

01:51
This is a "quick study" - I plan to record this again later, once I've had the piece longer and it has "settled" with me. The audio is still inadequate -- it all sounds too damp, echo, and the automatic gain-up on this 5.1 mic takes away my very soft playing.

Goldberg Variations # 26 - J.S. BACH (rough practice 1)

01:05
Recorded on Oct 10, 2014 -still in the learning stages of this variation. This is a particularly difficult variation because of the awkward overlapping of hands and tight spaces. This was a "cold" practice session...fingers not entirely warmed up here, so it sounds a bit "rough". I'll do a proper (prepared) recording another time, but this is one of my favourite variations so I just recorded it spontaneously. It's a funny camera angle, I don't have a way to rotate it 180 to get the keyboard with proper orientation.

Renner Premium Blue Point Hammers - Bach Prelude in C Major

02:33
Renner Premium Blue Point Hammers (not the "Renner Premium Classic Blue" hammers). The Blue Point hammers are new (since 2014) and have a different weave, are slightly softer, and produce a nice mellow, bell-like tone. I'm very satisfied with these hammers from Renner USA http://www.rennerusa.com/ and thanks to Colin Meckelburg, my superb technician, who is able to regulate and voice these so well: http://www.itune4u.ca/ COMPARE to the older hammers (which were lacquered to be hardened). Hard hammer = bright sound; soft hammer = soft, mellow sound. Very hard to control your dynamic range with hard hammers. Here are 2 other recordings of the same piece when my piano had the old, hard hammers: https://youtu.be/ztXwDjepCxU https://youtu.be/PgziXwd815w

WestJet - Embracing the Future

04:18
Beautiful, nostalgic music, but without a title. Please contact me if you have/know the title of this composition. This is one of my favourite WestJet Culture videos. I am proud to have worked (and retired) from such an incredibly unique company like WestJet. The reason I applied for a job with WestJet in Sept 17, 2001 is because of the stories that my relatives told me about their experiences when flying with WestJet. I was inspired, and right away identified WestJet's corporate values were in line with my own (in many ways)...I had fun for 11 years at WestJet and only disliked the difficulties of "scheduling." The people were great, and it was a place where we could really feel satisfied for a day's work well done. The opportunity to help so many people (external & internal guests) when they really needed it. I always thought: "good thing that I came to work today." The guests on the phone (I worked in reservations) were always so thankful and appreciative. This video embodies the essence of WestJet: the spirit, the fierce loyalty of WestJetters, the engaged workforce, and really about a culture of caring! It is a connection of team work, everyone from all bases delivering faithfully what needed to get done. And we never said "that's not my job" -- this is how our founder, Clive Beddoe, led by example. I am honoured and proud to have worked with such a company of fine people. As Clive said it, "a bunch of ordinary people doing extraordinary things..." Thank you all WestJetters. Vincent SPICER, SSA 3291, Proud WestJet Owner, retired May 31, 2012. Cautionary note: this video is dated (2001?), so keep in mind that some of the statistical information is no longer accurate (wrt fleet, growth, etc.)

Bach - Goldberg Variations: ARIA

03:13
One of my favourite pieces in the piano repertory, I find this little ARIA not only of exquisite beauty, but more difficult to play than one would expect. It appears simple, but great care and concentration is necessary to achieve phrasing as you intend it, to achieve perfect balance from one note to the next, to avoid sudden bumps (loud) or faded, fuzzy soft, almost inaudible notes. I have only scratched the surface in learning this piece, and this was a spontaneous recording (completely unrehearsed). I was motivated to record this as an "after" comparison since the piano was tuned just an hour prior to this recording (I often record "before & after" tunings). This ARIA is a perfect piece for testing a piano for pitch (tuning) but also for subtle refinements in the voicing and the action of the hammers and keys respectively. Listen to what I mean on the first note of this piece: compound octave G ... you hear absolute purity of pitch, tone, voicing, balance with this piece. Try playing this piece on a not-so-high quality piano, then on a top tier piano and see/hear/feel the difference. After listening to this, I must say that I'm disappointed with the audio quality. The camera seems to do an automatic "gain up" on the volume, so that that quieter I play, the louder the microphone amplifies it. It sounds like a bunch of clanging -- I'm unable to achieve the whisper quiet silent moments that I can actually produce in the room. Time to search for new quality AV recording equipment.
