LIVING ON WATER

05:05
Constructing a new house might not seem very special. But how about building a floating house on water? Lifestyles takes you to Amsterdam to have a glimpse of Jan Benthem's self-built floating house. Jan Benthem moved into his boat house about one and half years ago. And living on the water surface has given him some new experiences. SONDBITE: JAN BENTHEM, ARCHITECT "The house is floating. It moves a little bit. It's a nice feeling. But the most important thing and the most different thing is the light in the house is very beautiful. Because in a normal house, the light comes from above, in the house of water, most of the time lights come from below, because it is reflected from the water." Since 2009, nearly 100 floating houses have sailed into the lake of Ijburg, a man-made island on the Ijmeer Lake located at the east of Amsterdam. SONDBITE: JAN BENTHEM, ARCHITECT "This is where our house is now. This was photographed before all our houses are moved in. All the houses were built off site, so they were built not here but in the ship-builder's yard. And when they were finished they were taken by boat to this location. The most exciting thing here is that I can swim. I jump out of the window and I can step in my boat or I can start swimming. Now is almost summer. In the summer we swim every day. We just step out of our bedroom window in the water when we return to our house every evening. That's nice." Jan Benthem formed the first large-scale complex of floating houses in the Netherlands; and a bit later, there will be 65 additional floating houses joining the aquatic lifestyle. It takes around 2 years to build a floating house like this. The plot alone costs around 100 to 130 thousand euros, and altogether it's around 50,000 euros, which is 10% more expensive than the average house price in Amsterdam. The creator explained why the house costs so much in a architectural perspective. SONDBITE: JAN BENTHEM, ARCHITECT "You can see here how the house was constructed. This is a concrete box, which is floating. On top of the concrete house, there is a wooden house. Here are two wooden floors and a roof. And we are now in the basement of the house, below the water level at the moment." The exciting thing is that the floating houses can really 'rise with the flow'. If the water level rises, the concrete box moves accordingly with the water. But people may not realize that living on the floating house could be uneven, especially when they move all their books to one side of the house! SONDBITE: JAN BENTHEM, ARCHITECT "This is very special. These are concretes and still blocks. Because this is a floating house, you want it to float on level. If you change weight in your house, or if you have an asymmetric detail of your house, for instance there is too much weight there, you have to compensate with weight from the other side. You must make the house float on level. I have compensated the weight with the normal Dutch concrete pavement tiles. Every street in Amsterdam has this sort of tiles. I use them to level my house." According to Jan Benthem, "simple" is the crucial principle across the floating house. The living room is also a kitchen, which is only 7 by 10 meters large. People could always feel an airy, roomy, and amazing atmosphere everywhere, even in the small bathroom! SONDBITE: JAN BENTHEM, ARCHITECT "But I can close this. And this is my bathroom. And if I open this, the bathroom is gone. Here is the shower." Anja, a city planner working with the floating houses project, paid a visit to Benthem to see how he is adapting to this new environment. SOUNDBITE: ANJA WANNINGEN, AMSTERDAM CITY HALL "There is not so much difference between a floating house and a regular house. Like all the houses, the city of Amsterdam provides them with sewage, with water, with electricity. We provide them with public space and parking places and things like that." Since the houses are literally on water, there is little room for plants. Some households have created floating gardens. Considering the possible pollution to the river, all the houses were constructed on shore and sailed into the water later on. Having one fourth of its territory lower than sea level, the Netherlands might find a solution to the water threat by moving its inhabitants into these floating houses.

PLASTICS RECYCLING IN KENYA

03:06
Plastic waste management has remained a big challenge to environmentalists in Kenya. Waste, especially the non biodegradable plastic and polythene bags, have caused soil degradation, poisoning and have even provided an avenue for germs and parasites to thrive . The Kenyan Government, through the National Environmental Management Authority, has, over the years, tried to control the spread of plastic waste, especially in urban areas, but with little effect. But one man is changing the face of plastic waste management in the country. John Macharia ventured into plastic waste recycling in 1984. He was motivated to join the venture by his ability to repair his broken plastic utensils using polythene bags before going commercial . Every day, Macharia wakes up and heads to the dumpsite, which is within walking distance from his rural home in Eldoret town in Kenya's rift valley province. Here he collects plastic bags and containers which he carries back home to recycle them. He said he is motivated by hygiene and a clean environment. SOUNDBITE: JOHN MACHARIA, PLASTIC RECYCLER "Environmental pollution has been a nuisance especially in the towns estates , there are plastic bags all over its not even safe for our children , when it rains this plastic bags and containers hold water which is a breeding ground for mosquito s which spread malaria ." Once home, he sorts the plastic bags and containers apart. He later sets them ablaze in a specialized container where the smelted plastics flow to. He has a small blackboard in his homestead which he uses to educate other villagers on how to change waste into cash in the quest for a cleaner environment. The first product he makes using the hot plastic liquid is a plastic leg. He stuffs cloths into socks before pouring hot smelted plastic on top in layers. He repeats this process over and over again to come up with a plastic leg that can be used comfortably by an amputee. This is part of a research project he is carrying out to help victims of road accidents and those patients who face amputation by providing cheaper plastic legs. SOUNDBITE: JOHN MACHARIA, PLASTIC RECYCLER "Am doing this mainly to get experience , once i have it i will develop this legs to be used by amputees , they will be free for those who can afford and for those that cant afford i will give them free of charge." Macharia also makes utensils and decoration plaques. They contain different messages ranging from religious quotes, environmental protection messages and even inspirational quotes. He is however haunted by the 2008 post poll chaos that rocked Kenya, in which he lost all of his property. Through his artwork, he also shows Kenyans the need to live in peace and harmony, and to avoid chaos, especially during elections.

Ancient organ makes new sound

09:06
It is a well-known fact that the Netherlands contains an enormous treasury of fine historical organs. Thanks to its special historical conditions, the Netherlands is regarded as the organ garden of Europe. Today organ-making is mainly considered a traditional handmade skill in the Netherlands. Piet Raadgever is a craftsman who has worked his whole life in the field of organ building. He retired earlier this year. Sadly for Piet, neither of his two sons wanted to continue the business. SOUNDBITE: PIET RAADGEVER, Organ maker "Because of the economic situation and secularization of the society that not so many people go to church any more, the organ building business declined. there's only half of the employees left." According to the craftsman, the fact now is that less organ builders means there is more work to do. Sometimes people have to be on a waiting list for up to 5 years to get one made.

WAR ANIMAL MONUMENT

03:42
INTRO: Through out military history, animals have gone to war with humans. They served in wars that man started, and their loyalty is scarcely mentioned. To mark the sacrifices animals made for mankind, a monument for animals died in wars was unveiled this past Saturday. PKG: On a chilly November morning in Ottawa, veterans and government officials came together to honor the war sacrifices made by those who couldn't speak for themselves. Laureen Harper, wife of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and a confessed cat lover, was the honorary patron of the Animals In War project. She was joined by members of Parliament and Senators in the unveiling of three plaques and a sculpture designed to commemorate the work done by animals in war. Second World War veteran Michael Warren said he had developed a personal connection to animals during wartime. SOUNDBITE: MICHAEL WARREN, WWII veteran "My dad was in the Royal Horse Artillery in the First War, and he was a horseman. And he was able to ride two horses - a foot on each one - and take small jumps. He also got twenty five cents a day extra for breaking wild horses for the services." A variety of animals were used during wartime. Mules carried supplies and artillery; horses hauled field guns; carrier pigeons delivered messages; and dogs worked as messengers, medical assistants, mine detectors and in search and rescue. SOUNDBITE: GILLES CHARTRAND, Ceremony master "As you will hear throughout today's ceremony, mules, carrier pigeons, cats, dogs, camels, elephants and even glowworms to name just a few have served steadfastly beside Canadian soldiers over the years." Animals in War project leader and veteran Lloyd Swick said that he was very pleased that Confederation Park - only about two blocks from the National War Memorial - was chosen as the site location. SOUNDBITE: LLOYD SWICK, Leader of Animal in War project "At the dawn of the last century, Canada sent 50,000 horses off to fight in the Boer War. This it is fitting that this morning' s unveiling does take place next to the Boer War monument." The sculptures feature the work of Canadian artist and sculptor David Clendining and are sponsored by the Harper government. SOUNDBITE: LLOYD SWICK, Leader of Animal in War project "From the very start, this project has had the support of Canadians across this country. Canadians love their animals and that I believe speaks highly for us as a nation." Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson proclaimed the day War Animals Day for the city, presenting an official proclamation to project leader Lloyd Swick. SOUNDBITE: JIM WATSON, Mayor of Ottwa "Whereas War Animals Day is a time to remember all species of war animals and pay tribute to the enduring bond with the soldiers they served alongside with, whereas our citizens and visitors are encouraged to learn more about and honor the war animals, their sacrifice and the invaluable contribution they made to helping shape Canada' s military history." Aside from the event, the department of Veterans Affairs Canada has declared November 5th to the 11th as Veterans' Week across Canada, a time to celebrate the contribution of past and present veterans. Canada now joins the U.K. as in choosing to officially commemorate the actions of animals in war. In November 2004, Princess Anne, a horse fancier, helped dedicate the Animals in War Memorial in Hyde Park, London.

DOG DIVING COMPETITION

03:07
The dog-diving series contest DockDogs closed its curtains on Sunday in Houston, the United States. The four-day event was held at downtown Houston's Discovery Green, attracting around 60 four-legged athletes from Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana in various diving competitions. CNCWorld takes a closer look. Participating dogs had to compete in the first three days' primary competitions before they could win the ticket to Sunday's finale. Houstonian Desiree Motz brought her sweet girl Quila, a Louisiana Catahoula-Leopard dog. The six years old Quila was rescued in Louisiana from Hurricane Katrina and was later moved to Houston. Desiree began to raise her when she was only six weeks old, and afterwards, they began their six-year-long national tour dog jumping journey. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) DESIREE MOTZ, COMPETITOR AND DEVOTED DOG LOVER: "We travel all around. We go wherever there is competition. We travel. About two years ago, we did an eight-thousand-mile road trip and we did a dog-diving circuit and we are actually titled in every organization or company that does this competitive sport. We have traveled to northeast, Michigan, Indiana, Florida, Louisiana, Ohio and it really builds a good relationship between you and your dog." The event aims to strengthen the bond between pet owners and pet dogs and encourage the youth to get along well with animals. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) DESIREE MOTZ, COMPETITOR AND DEVOTED DOG LOVER: "Since we started this, this has improved our relationship we have become much closer. It's definitely positive. The thing about the sport is the dog has to go into the water on its own. It can't be pushed, it can't be shoved. And you can't throw the dog into the water. It's very humane and positive. We also have junior competitors, at the age of seven, you can compete. So we really encourage youth to get in there, get them something to do and get them involved. And also give them a good understanding of animals and incorporate animals into our lives." Besides the diving contests, other activities such as dogs' costume show and live music performances were also carried out. DockDogs has grown into one of the most popular events celebrated by Houstonians each year since its first version five years ago.

CAN URINE BE A PROBLEM-SOLVER

03:08
The energy crisis is one of the biggest challenges in the 21st century, and scientists around the world are doing all sorts of research in order to find replacements for traditional fossil fuel. Some scientists in the Netherlands are saying they could cut the cost of energy--by using urine. Aside from the popular alternatives, such as wind and solar energy, power sources can be obtained from many waste materials, including urine. [STANDUP] CHRISTIEN VAN DEN BRINK, CNC correspondent "Going to the toilet is a daily rituals that no one can escape from. But did you know that one visit to the toilet gives around 300 milliliters of urine? You could either flush this back in the toilet, where it belongs, or you could make energy out of the yellow liquid. Scientists have calculated that with this little bit, you can let shine a lamp for around 2 hours. (Flushing it through the toilet) Not bad for waste water. How that works? You're about to see that now." SOUNDBITE(ENGLISH) DENNIS HEIJKOOP, Project leader of water treatment DHV "We are making waste water treatment plants. We are now here at the TU Delft university. And here is one part of our pilot from the fuel cell. The idea is quite new. All the components of the idea are actually quite proven and done. But the combination between ammonia from a waste water treatment plant to a fuel cell and then making electricity from it, that's the new part of it." At the TU Delft University, professor Patel and his co-workers are doing further research. SOUNDBITE(ENGLISH) HRISHIKESH PATEL, Professor, TU Delft Univ. "What we are trying to achieve is very high efficiency electricity production mainly from biofuels. And ammonia, produced from bioXX sources is also a biofuel. And this is a set up for studying high efficiency electro chemical electricity production from biofuels, for example ammonia which can be produced from wastewater or urine." And that urine needs to come from wastewater. SOUNDBITE(ENGLISH) DENNIS HEIJKOOP, Project leader of water treatment DHV "We are now at the waste water treatment plant. In this water the waste water from household is collected and treated and what you can see here is that after this process water is highly concentrated. And this concentrated water with nitrogen and phosphate can be used for a fuel cell. Now what we think is that on short term it will be profitable. We are thinking about a return of investment of about five years." Profitable or not, it is expected that energy out of urine will only play a tiny role in the total share of renewable energy sources, but unlike many other resources, people will never run out of the yellow "gold".

HUMAN BODY JOURNEY

05:46
INTRO The Dutch are proud of coming up with innovative ideas. And well developed ideas can often bring successful business. "A journey through the human body" in the Corpus museum is one such example. PKG: This huge human statue can be seen far away from the highway. It's not just there for decoration, but rather the essence of Corpus museum where you can travel through the statue of the human body from the feet to the brain. Henri Remmers founded Corpus about five years ago, and today it is one of the few Dutch museums that can stand on its own and generate a profit. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) HENRI REMMERS, Corpus Museum founder: "I get the idea about 14 or maybe 15 years ago. In the U.S., there was an exhibition. And it was a mother exhibit and she was pregnant. The visitors had a communication with the baby in her belly. The visitors said always to the mother, you look nice and what is it, is it a girl or a boy, so this communication starts. And I think it is a really interesting thing because the human body is a unique magnetism. So I was thinking about that unique magnetism, we are the owner of it. You are the owner of your body so how it is working actually and how can we show that to young people and old people, so you know how it is working and you can take care of it a bit better. So this is the confrontation I would like to make and that is the start of Corpus." It takes 55 minutes to walk through the Corpus museum, which also holds other educational and entertaining activities at the medical interaction center. According to Remmers, since its opening in March 2008, Corpus has attracted more than 1 million visitors. Many children come with school field trips for the first time and want to experience the excitement again. It's Jan's second time in Corpus. Though he found the cycling test in the interaction center most interesting, he did learn a lot about the human body from the guided journey. SOUNDBITE (DUTCH) JAN, Visitor: "I find it is very interesting. I am interested in the human body. It is all about how the human body works. We saw the kidney, we knew how precise the functioning of the brain, and how you can smell." However, a creative idea alone doesn't make a successful business. Being a smart entrepreneur, Remmers has created a good composition with all the resources. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) HENRI REMMERS, Corpus Museum founder: "If you think about the human body you have to think in two ways: how interesting can we make it from the visitors and how commercial we can make it because you have to survive with this idea. So this combination was a very good combination, because the body is for everybody interesting, and health in life is for everybody interesting, and more exercise is for everybody interesting. Also, good nutrition is very important. So these elements are the basic of the concept. We put these elements in the Corpus journey. It sounds very simple. But the most difficult thing is how can we communicate with people who don't know anything about medical things, even though you are the owner of a highly medical body." Now group 30 is having their tour. Visitors are approaching the mouth. Here you can see the teeth, the gums, the tongue, the uvula and every other component inside the mouth. You can touch them and feel the texture of different parts as well as the humidity inside the mouth. A ticket to Corpus costs around 17 euros, but ticket sales are not the only financial resources that keep Corpus running. Aside from being a tourist attraction, Corpus also serves organic food in their restaurant and holds meetings and conferences, most of which are medical related. In addition, there are many other partners on board ranging from healthcare companies, the water industry, research institutes to government ministries, in order to provide Corpus with extra financial support. Corpus' success is quite unique under the influence of the economic crisis. Many Dutch museums have to cut their budget due to the shrinking government subsidies, and some of them have to shut down or survive with hindered programs. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) HENRI REMMERS, Corpus Museum founder: "We are one of the museums who is making their profit. Maybe it is the system, the way, how we communicate with the visitors. There is a lot to do. There is a lot of interactive things to do. We have no subsidies from the government, we work actually with sales of tickets, our merchandizing, our restaurant, and our founding fathers. They are very important part of our income to survive with corpus and it's ok. It works very well. We work like that, let's say that. I think it is very difficult for other museums but they have to try maybe." Corpus is also planning to develop overseas to China and North America.

'BABY BOXES' IN CHINA

07:35
http://smarturl.it/CNCWorld It's illegal in China to abandon children. But Chinese research institutes estimate that about 100,000 children in the country are given up every year. Official data show that in 2011, nearly 14,300 kids were under the care of government-sponsored orphanages, many of them with serious disabilities or diseases. The government is now encouraging the building of baby boxes, where infants can be dropped off, so they're at least protected from the elements. So far, 19 provinces across China are said to have built or plan to build such facilities. But the move has sparked a heated debate. Successful case of water treatment

05:48
Talking about river pollution control, people can easily think of Germany, whose major rivers like the Rhine have once been seriously polluted due to industrial development. After dozens of years of treatment, the Rhine and some other rivers flowing through the well-known Ruhr area have recovered their vitality. Some even become popular holiday resorts. CNC shows you a successful case of wastewater treatment in Germany. Before the 1950s, the Rhine was still very clean and clear. People can swim and fish in the river. However, in late 1950s, due to the large-scale reconstruction work after the World War II, a large number of enterprises using the water from the Rhine and discharging large amount of wasterwater back. Thus the Rhine water deteriorated sharply, and fish completely disappeared. In 1957, Germany made the Water Resources Act (WHG), and completed some amendments in 2009, which came into force in March, 2010. The bill specifies water quantity, quality and management and requires sustainable economic development. The water industry should be based on public well-being and safeguard the interests of water consumers. Under the Federal Water Act, water users must obtain a government license. In addition, the German federal government has also developed a number of regulations to guide the water industry activities, such as maintaining water purity laws, sewage treatment plan, a number of water management plannings. In 1976, Germany made the Efflunet Charges Act (AbwAG), which brings in the "polluter pays" principle to bear environmental costs. The charge is calculated according to the amount and harmfulness of the respective substances discharged and is controlled by the federal government in the area of water quality protection and enhancement. Berlin is Germany largest city, with a population of over 300 million. It has a comprehensive sewage treatment system. SOUNDBITE(ENGLISH): ULRIKE FRANZKE, LOCAL WATER DISPOSAL COMPANY "We have our own group for controlling the industry. We can take the tests to measure the concentration of the waste water of the industry. We have certain concentration parameters they have to meet. And if they don't meet the parameters in the worst case, we could refuse the waste water. And on the other hand there is the government who has to take care of the permit for the industry to discharge into the sewage system. So it's a dual system of permits the industry has to have discharging the waste water." The total length of its sewers and the sewage main channel are over 10,000 kilometers. Industrial and domestic sewage flows to sewage pumping stations through the sewers, then the pumping stations pump the wastewater into treatment facilities. Thanks to the sewage pumping station, if the sewage regulators find enterprises or individual discharging sewage, system would refuse to accept it, thus avoid expanding pollution. Wastewater will go through four stages including treatment screening, scrapping, physical purification and biological purification before discharging the water into Berlin's rivers and lakes. In summer time, as many people swim and play in Berlin's rivers and lakes, a sterilization treatment will be added before discharging. Germany's success can be summarized into two aspects: first, making comprehensive laws and regulations; second, investing heavily on pollution control and establishing regulatory bodies that cover the entire basin. To control pollution of the Rhine, in 1963, bordering countries of Switzerland, France, Luxemburg, Germany and the Netherlands signed agreement to create the International Commission on the Protection of the Rhine against Pollution (ICPR), and the European Economic Community, predecessor of European Community, joined in the commission in 1976. The commission developed corresponding regulations to enforce reatement of industrial wastewater before being discharged into the river. It also took strict control on discharging industrial, agricultural and domestic solid pollutants into the Rhine. The offenders would be fined up to 66,000 US. SOUNDBITE(ENGLISH): ULRIKE FRANZKE, LOCAL WATER DISPOSAL COMPANY "The industrial water has to fulfill certain requirements. Industry needs permit to discharge into the sewage system and by this way they have to maintain certain standards for the sewage system and then for treating sewage water in the treatment plant. For example, the chemical industry in Berlin has its own wastewater treatment plant to pretreate the waste water before discharging into the sewage system." Now, the Rhine is regulated by the ICPR, whose Chairman was taken in turn by ministers of member states. Conferences are held every year to determine the major issues in protecting the Rhine.

TEEN SWIMS ACROSS LAKE ONTARIO

02:44
It was a gruelling swim. Battling high currents, leg cramps and cold temperatures, it was a test of not only strength and endurance, also a mental battle. But after nearly 27 hours in the water, a 14-year-old girl set a new record Sunday evening. Annaleise Carr officially became the youngest person to cross Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes in North America, when she reached the finish line in the Canadian city of Toronto. When Carr touched the walls of the finish line, she was greeted by 400 friends, family and supporters who had been out all day looking into the lake and waiting for her to arrive. The ambitious feat was a year in the making. Aside from making the history books, it was for a good cause. Carr decided to take on the challenge a year ago to raise 30,000 Canadian dollars for Camp Trillium, a summer camp for children with cancer. When one of her coaches Phil Ogden first heard of her plan, he was worried. But the concerns soon gave way. After lots of training and consulting with her coaches and doctor, she was deemed both physically and mentally prepared for the long distance swim. Carr officially set off on her swim on Saturday evening when water temperatures were recorded at around 22 degrees Celsius at 6:15 p.m. She began her journey from the shores of a Canadian town called Niagara-on-the-Lake, located in Southern Ontario. But the biggest concern really wasn't whether she could swim this distance. According to the coach, the question was "can she maintain her body temperature for this long a time in this cold water?" And the team did a lot to make sure that the swimmer eats and drinks! Escorted by seven boats and a total of twenty-three people, she never got out of the water, took breaks periodically and was fed water and food by a tether rope. There were several setbacks, according to Ogden, who said Carr had faced high winds and currents out in the lake. And there were moments when they weren't sure if she was going to pull through. Ogden says people escorting her on the swim encouraged Carr by telling her how much they've already raised in donations. By the end of her swim, she had exceeded her initial goal of 30,000 Canadian dollars and raised more than 90,000 dollars. When she arrived at the finish the following day at 8:55 p.m., Carr was exhausted, but managed to wave to the crowds. She was first checked out by a doctor on site, but was later whisked away to the hospital for a more thorough check-up.
