Malaysian Roti Canai

01:52
Malaysian roti canai is sometimes referred to as "flying bread" because of the process of tossing and spinning by which it is made. Roti canai is a type of Indian-influenced flat-bread found in Malaysia and Indonesia. It is often sold in Mamak stalls in Malaysia; also in Malay, Minangkabau and Aceh restaurants in Indonesia. It is known as roti prata in Southern Malaysia and Singapore, and is similar to the Indian Kerala porotta. Roti canai is circular and flat. There are two ways to make roti canai that is either to twirl it until the dough becomes a very thin sheet and then folded into a circular shape or to spread out the dough as thinly as possible before being folded. Then the folded dough is grilled with oil. The first method is more popular and faster than the second. The term 'roti paratha' in Malay means 'plate bread'.

How To Make A Concrete Turn-Table or Potter's Wheel

01:31
A turn-table or potter's wheel is often used in pottery to shape round ceramic ware. Modern potter's wheel uses a motor or crankshaft and flywheel to turn the platform. Traditional pottery wheel uses a pivot system usually in the shape of an inverted cone and attached to the platform. It's hand-powered. My potter's wheel uses glass marbles acting like ball-bearings and ferro-cement for the platform and base. I created this potter's wheel or turntable especially for my ferro-cement projects. It helps me turn the project assembly around as I work on it rather than walk over the other side.

SMK St. George Drummers Beat 24-Seasons Chinese Drums at Taiping Sentral Mall

08:33
Local students also took part in an hour-long preview performance of the Royal Belum World Drums Festival 2012, held at the Taiping Sentral Mall on 21 February 2012. Culminating the mini-concert is the final performance by nine boys and girls of S.M.K. St George, Taiping. They played the 24-season rhythm on nine Chinese drums instead of the traditional 24 drums set and captivated the appreciative crowd with their enthusiastic beating of the drums. The number twenty four represents agricultural seasons from the Chinese calendar and the name of each season is carefully painted in calligraphy on each drum. Instead of just four primary seasons of Summer, fall/autumn, winter and spring, the Chinese farmers further divided the four main seasons into six secondary seasons each. For example, in Spring the six sub-seasons are: First of spring; Rain water; Awakening; Spring equinox; Clear water; and Rains suitable for grain. Even though each drum troupe has its own individual style, the original styles of performance were meant to depict movements of farmers and activities on a farm. First performed in the opening ceremony of the National Dance Competition in Johor Bharu, Malaysia in 1988, this classical art form has evolved into a truly unique Malaysian 24-Seasons drumming style. The Royal Belum Forest in Perak, Malaysia, contains the largest contiguous expanse of unprotected forest in Peninsular Malaysia. Famous Taiping Popiah or Fresh Spring Rolls

01:04
Popiah or fresh spring rolls are delicious. They are eaten with a sweet sauce such as a bean sauce, a blended soy sauce or oyster sauce or a shrimp paste sauce and with hot chilli sauce before it is filled. The filling is mainly finely grated and steamed or stir-fried turnip or mengkuang which has been cooked. Other ingredients include bean sprouts, French beans, and lettuce leaves, grated carrots, thinly sliced fried tofu, finely chopped peanuts or peanut powder, fried shallots, and shredded fried eggs. Other common variations of popiah include include pork (lightly seasoned and stir-fried), shrimp or crab meat. Some hawkers will add fried pork lard. In Taiping, you will find the best popiah at the Air Kacang Taiping coffee shop at the corner of Jalan Panggung Wayang and Jalan Kelab Cina. Say hi to Ah Kuan, second generation popiah seller who inherited this delicious recipe from his mum who made Taiping popiah famous at the Tai Chien restaurant during the early 60s. In mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan there are "popiah parties" at home, where the ingredients are laid out and guests make their own popiah with proportions of ingredients to their own personal liking.

Taiping Nine Emperor Gods Procession 2012

07:25
One of the highlights of the Nine Emperor Gods festival is a procession along the busy streets of the town where all the deities are carried by devotees in beautiful decorated floats or sedan chairs. Devotees wait at their homes for the procession to pass by. Many more line the streets to watch the faithful men and women dressed in colorful costumes of the various deities. The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is a nine-day Taoist celebration beginning on the eve of 9th lunar month of the Chinese calendar. It's one of the major religious festivals in Malaysia as well as many Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Myanmar, and Singapore. On the eve of the ninth moon, temples of the deities hold a ceremony to invoke and welcome the nine emperors. Since the arrival of the gods are believed to be through the waterways, processions are held from temples to the sea-shore or river to symbolize this belief. Devotees dressed in traditional white, carrying incense and candles, await the arrival of their excellencies. A carnival-like atmosphere pervades the temple throughout the nine-day festival. During this period of time, the constant tinkling of a prayer bell and chants from the temple priests are heard. Most devotees stay at the temple, eat vegetarian meals and recite continuous chanting of prayer. It is believed that there will be rain throughout the nine days of celebration. The ninth day of the festival is its climax. A procession which draws scores of devotees send the deities back home.
