Thank you for this video. I have been wanting to learn how to roll my hair for quite some time, but haven't been able to find a video that described the steps very well. A lot of them are very vague. You were very thorough in your explanation. I will be trying this! :) One question, though. When you started on the back of your Mohawk, did you roll the hair towards the ceiling, or towards the floor? This will be my first time rolling my hair, so I want to make sure I do it correctly. Thanks a lot! :)
SnoWhiteQueen (2 years ago)
+fancyflairlady It wasn't too late. Thank you for your help!! ^_^
fancyflairlady (2 years ago)
Thank you, I'm glad it was helpful. Hopefully this isn't too late to help you, but I roll the back of the mohawk towards the floor until I get the last two sections near the nape. Those last two rollers I usually end up rolling them towards the ceiling.
crystal williams (2 years ago)
I started from the bangs next time I'll start at the crown. Also spray bottle and bigger rollers
fancyflairlady (1 year ago)
keep working on getting each section of hair to be smooth and taut before you wrap it around the roller. Depending on your hair type you may get away with using a detangling brush if the fine tooth comb isn't doing a good enough job smoothing.
crystal williams (1 year ago)
My hair doesn't lay super smooth on the roller
Shaneqia Montgomery (2 years ago)
did you use foam or set lotion?
Shaneqia Montgomery (2 years ago)
+fancyflairlady ohkay, Thank you for the tips, this gone be my first time doing it 😊
fancyflairlady (2 years ago)
Oh, I do use a leave-in conditioner (just nothing with hold). Then yes, spray with water and roll it up!
Shaneqia Montgomery (2 years ago)
+fancyflairlady okay so after i wash it juss spray water & roll it up?
fancyflairlady (2 years ago)
No, I tend to not really like the firm hold that they create. I prefer a soft hold and those foams and lotions tent to make it hard to style after removing the rollers. But I still experiment with foams every now and then to see if I can figure out how to make it work with my hair.
Ronnie Cool (2 years ago)
and what relaxer do you use? you look fantastic
fancyflairlady (2 years ago)
Thanks! I've used Affirm Fiberguard Sensitive Scalp (No-Lye) for years.
Ronnie Cool (2 years ago)
how often do you relax your hair?
fancyflairlady (2 years ago)
Normally, every 3-4 months. Lately, I've been doing 6 month stretches.
Nicole Pullen (2 years ago)
How many roller did you use in total, I'm trying to figure out how how many packs of rollers do I need to buy
fancyflairlady (2 years ago)
22-26 depending on how small I make my sections.
mahamuda begum (2 years ago)
what kind of rollers are they? what are they called?

SalonCare Magnetic Rollers

Kris0726 (2 years ago)
I have soft fine hair. Do you think it's better to use water only or a setting lotion?
fancyflairlady (2 years ago)
+Kris0726 It's up to you. I don't usually use a setting lotion because it makes my curls hard. If you want more hold than water will give you, but still want to be able to manipulate your hair without messing you the curls, then you can dilute your setting lotion with water.
sweetlife6299 (3 years ago)
This is a really good tutorial. I set my hair for the first time today and your instructions were very easy to follow and I was able to set my hair with no problem, which is surprising since I'm not good at doing my own hair lol

foreverblissful101 (4 years ago)
How many rollers did you use?
fancyflairlady (3 years ago)
If I had to guess, I'd say between 20 and 25, but I think I count them at some point during the video.
may mingle (4 years ago)
Thanks, that's really cool. Where can i buy the hair clips you used to clip the rollers??? I wanna buy the clips
fancyflairlady (4 years ago)
Any beauty supply store should care them.  I found mine at Sally's Beauty Supply Store.
AGorgeousBeauty (4 years ago)
Has anyone ever tried this with conair self grip rollers?
Tara Green (4 years ago)
I'm doing my first roller set right now.... I hope this works but did you roll the back of your Mohawk in the same direction as the front or do you roll the back in the opposite direction? Also is there a part 2 to this video?
fancyflairlady (4 years ago)
I hope this worked out for you.  I roll all the hair in the mohawk section to the back.  The link to part two of this video is in the description box.
Skipper Nelson (4 years ago)
Hello pretty lady! What planet do you live on where black women use rollers to style their hair? i am so tired of seeing black girls walking around with nappy hair it is not a style if it looks as though is is not being cared for! Hair Grease, Moisturizer, Hair oil! i see it everyday! The black mothers are not taking care of their daughters hair! in the 1990's black girls wore beautiful hair styles! look at SWV's music video "you're the one" their hair is beautiful! i wish more black women would style their hair and take care of it! all natural hair styles are not attractive! some look horrible! i am very proud of you keep it up Pretty Lady!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
angelbae727 (11 months ago)
Skipper Nelson yea natural hair is hair in the most natural in manipulated state so even though you don't like it its natural. Twits outs and Bantu knots are manipulation long story short is every one has thier own natural look I keep my daughters hair twisted with bows and barretes but I leave my hair be I moisturize and pull it. I don't even comb everyday but thats just my look and I love my untamed hair like Huey on th boondocks

Thanks for this. I have been struggling to find a way to set my hair since I no longer have my mother to assist. I will try this on my next wash.

Stephanie Trill (4 years ago)
I thought your hair was supposed to be wet when u rollerset
fancyflairlady (4 years ago)
It is if you want to get straight/sleek results.  I kept a spray bottle with water to re-wet each section before I rolled it onto the roller.
Kani B. (4 years ago)
Thanks for your help. Is it okay to roller set my hair twice a week after deep conditioning?
fancyflairlady (4 years ago)
Hi Kani B., While I would love to have fresh bouncy curls in my hair twice a week, that would be a bit much for my hair, as it breaks easily.  But I would suggest you give a try (paying close attention to breakage) and see how your hair responds to it. If you don't notice too much breakage, then go for it.
Ashley Velazquez (4 years ago)
Where did u get the fine thooth comb at plz I like it thanks
Ashley Velazquez (4 years ago)
It ok ♥♥♥
fancyflairlady (4 years ago)
I'm pretty sure I got it from Sally's Beauty Supply Store.  That's where I get most of my hair tools from.  (sorry about the delayed response)
pimpmyride (4 years ago)
Incorrect clips.
Shannon C (4 years ago)
Thank you SO much for this video!!  It was my first time trying to roller set it on my own and your specific directions made all the difference; my hair came out great! Thanks again :)
fancyflairlady (4 years ago)
That's great! I love hearing that.
musiclovee33 (5 years ago)
After many failed attempts of trying to roller set my relaxed (yet still thick) long hair, I gave up. Watching this tutorial gave me hope, so I gave it a shot. To my surprise, I'm pleased with the end result! Thanks so much for making this!!!
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
Really! Wow, that's great! I'm so glad that it was helpful. :)
Brithney Wright (5 years ago)
thanks for posting this video, helped me alot! 1st time i've set my hair
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
I'm happy to hear that.
Emiko Mackins (5 years ago)
I am typically a flatiron every two weeks and wrap my hair at night kind of girl. This style I like it a lot and will have my hairdresser help me first and then try it. You did a very good job!!!
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
Thank you! If I had some to roll my hair for me, I'd do it every week.  I really do like it a lot.  I hope you find it easy to get the hang of it!
MsB (5 years ago)
Hi! Which rollers do you recommend? The mesh or magnetic ones? Thank you
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
I've only used Magnetic Rollers.  But my understanding of the difference between the two is that Mesh Rollers dry your hair faster and magnetic rollers take longer but create smoother results.  So it just depends on what you're looking for. +babycrazy28
tgbarbie5 (5 years ago)
How many weeks post relaxer are you??
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
I don't remember.  I guess I should have listed that in the description box when I uploaded this video. :/
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
You mean, Monica Calhoun. You know the first time I heard that was earlier this year. The receptionist at my dentist's office was convinced I could be her sister, lol. Thanks, Shamina E. :)
Shamina E (5 years ago)

fancyflairlady (5 years ago)

fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
That's great! I'm so glad it work out so well for you!
Rebecca Gamble (5 years ago)
This was very very helpful
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
No problem! :)
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
It gives me lift at the roots, so that my hair looks more voluminous.
Burgundy915 (5 years ago)
I've been roller setting my hair downwards since a teenager. I must try the upwards method! Do you find it gives your hair more body or a feathered/layered look if wearing it out same day?
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
I do moisturize lightly, but I think it's just the wrapping process, it gets rid of most of the volume and curls we get from roller setting. I try to pin curl instead of wrapping when I want to enjoy the curls. :)
CurlyNella1011 (5 years ago)
Do you moisturize lightly when doing roller sets not to weigh it down. My roller sets come out nice but when i wrap it and take down next day its straight and doesn't look like i did a roller set smh
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
Thanks so much!
thaextension (5 years ago)
I have to say, I've watched quite a few roller setting videos, and yours has absolutely been the best. Thank you so much. Now that my hair's longer, setting is much more difficult. Will be trying again after I relax my hair in a few weeks.
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
Great!
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
Yeah, the three roller on the top, front, side section always give me trouble. I think by then I'm fight for space with those metal clips and trying to make sure I don't mess up the hair on the roller. It's a struggle but one day we'll master it!
mrsgriffin41 (5 years ago)
I struggle with the sides!
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
Good luck!!
DoraaaaC (5 years ago)
Okay that makes sense. I did my hair the exact same way you did. It was very easy! Great tutorial
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
Good luck! Just be patient and keep your water bottle close by!
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
(1) it is easier to roll and (2) it stretches my new growth better than when I do it the other way.
Brittany-Marie Aarons (5 years ago)
This is great!! I'm gonna try it tomorrow. I don't think mine will be as perfect as yours because I'm new to doing my own hair but I hope your technique works!
DoraaaaC (5 years ago)
Is there a specific reason why you roll the side rollers up toward the crown in stead of downward?
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
No problem. Good Luck with your roller set!
Anna Mitchell (5 years ago)
Oh thank u so much. Great tutorial. Gotta go try this...like now.
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
Thank you!
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
You are so right. It took me years to get where I'm at now. I was trying to rollerset way before I even knew what a healthy hair journey was, lol. And I still have room for improvement.
butterfly9274 (5 years ago)
This is the hardest thing ever!! roller setting is hard!! kudooos to you
LaShon Hicks (5 years ago)
Ok thanks :)
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
In theory, it should work as long as you make it wet enough for the hair to lay smoothly on the rollers and you let it dry 100% before removing the rollers. But I've never tried it so I'm not positive on how it will turn out. If you try it, let me know how it goes.
LaShon Hicks (5 years ago)
Ok I washed n blow dried my hair 2 days ago .... I was wondering could I just use the spray bottle to wet the sections of my hair before I put the rollers in or would it be best to just wash my hair again leave it wet n then roller set ?
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
Thank you!
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
That's a great tip. I might look into that. Based on how you described it, it sounds like it would allow for more rollers and tighter sets. Thanks!
la dub (5 years ago)
This was a great tutorial.
danysedai (5 years ago)
That looks great! I love rollersetting. The only thing I would suggest is to change the clips for the other ones with a loop on the end (hinge) part, the loop allows the roller to slide all the way through and you won't get space between rollers like you have now where the heads of your clips protrude making for wider parts. Those clips really changed the way I rollerset. You can get them at Sally's Beauty Supply.
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
Lol, you are exactly right. Most weeks (unless I really force myself) I try to let it airdry. The hooded dryer is the worst part for me because I hate all that heat in my face. But it expedites my hair day so I do sit under it.
Mark Matthews (5 years ago)
damn after doing all that. ill be to tired to sit under a hot dryer.
fancyflairlady (5 years ago)
I really appreciate your comment, waterlilly2008!
Sdestra (5 years ago)
I need to learn...one of the great things I don't know how to do well...lol. Yours came out beautiful.
